As a Police Officer you'll play a vital role in ensuring that the communities of Cleveland are kept safe.  It isn’t easy but it is rewarding and can be a career like no other.  We want people to join us who have a range of life experiences and backgrounds; it is vitality important that we represent all the communities that we serve.

New entry routes 

We are very excited to announce we are launching some new entry routes into Cleveland Police, founded on effective work performance with academic achievement. They cover areas that are critical to effective policing in the 21st century such as evidence-based policing, supporting vulnerable people, dealing with cybercrime and crime prevention.

IPLDP Plus

This route is ideal for you if you don’t meet the criteria for the PCDA.  However, you’ll need one Level 3 Qualification in any subject or relevant quantifiable experience for the role of Police Constable.

We are only running a small number of IPLDP cohorts so should you be interested in this route you will need to have no pre-booked annual leave as is won’t be possible to defer. 

Pre-join

This is the route for you if you have a degree in professional policing which is a professional academic knowledge-based degree, based on the national curriculum for the police constable role. You will need to have already graduated within the last 5 years before applying to join us.

Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship (PCDA)

The PCDA is the right route for you if meet the eligibility criteria detailed below and do not have previous experience as a Police Officer.

During your training as an officer, you will also gain a BSc Degree in Professional Policing Practice, which will be recognised internationally.  Your formal training will take place alongside your practical work in one of our many policing teams across Cleveland. 

Academic Qualifications for the PCDA:  

To be eligible for this route you will have achieved:

• Level 2 qualifications in both English and Maths for example a GCSE or iGCSE at grade C (level 4) or above, Functional Skills Level 2, Key Skills Level 2 (Communication and / or Literacy) or Adult Numeracy / Literacy PLUS
• Level 3 qualification(s) in any subject(s) that equate to 80 UCAS points (or a full level 5 qualification and above can also be taken into consideration) – these points could be from your A Levels, Level 3 Diplomas, and an International Baccalaureate to name a few. Please check your UCAS points here OR
• Be in the final year of a Level 3 qualification and be predicted to achieve a minimum of 80 UCAS points, unfortunately if you do not achieve the 80 points, we will be required to decline your interest.

If you meet the Level 2 requirements but do not have the level 3 requirements listed above, we may be able to accept significant and equivalent work experience in its place. 

Please note that higher educational qualifications such as a degree cannot be used in place of the Level 2 qualifications.

Am I eligible?

The people of Cleveland deserve an excellent service, so we are looking for the best people to join us and demonstrate our values. But there’s some formal stuff you’ll need to have too, and it’s really important to make sure you meet the eligibility criteria for which ever route you apply for.

You must also:

• be 17 years of age or older (you must be 18 by the time you are appointed)
• be a British citizen, a citizen of a country that is a member of the European Economic Area or Switzerland, or a Commonwealth citizen or foreign national who is resident in the UK and free from restrictions
• have a full manual driving license, with 6 months driving experience when appointed
• be able pass the vetting requirements
• have been resident in the UK for the past three years (for vetting purposes)
• not have tattoos on your hands, neck, forearms or face that could be offensive
• not be registered bankrupt (or have bankruptcy debts that have been discharged within the past three years). If you have any other outstanding and unmanageable debts, please contact us for more information
• be able to pass a job-related fitness test
• be able to pass a medical assessment

Should you not meet the requirements above we will be required to decline your application. 

Please note as part of the application process Cleveland Police has now moved to the National Process and you will be asked to complete the National Sift before completing the online assessment centre with the College of Policing.

Closing date for applications has been extended to 21st November 2022.
